Seriously though. Since nothing is coming out of DE and we have plenty of stuff left from the unfinished project, we're going to release a nice montage of everything we had done. That's basically all the animation, audio, editing and conceptual art we did, spiced with our commentary, which will reflect our thoughts on the whole project and also explain a few things (subtitles included, of course, for you whiny guys who don't give a care about our accents).

Yeah. Now let's see if we can get this final thing (that'll wrap the whole project up once and for all) done in this life.

Oh man, did I know this post will be here one day.

Well, teen spirit threw us over the plank again, we're to'ly finished with this project. That is, we're not gonna finish it, continue it, whatever. At this point, most of you are probably laughing, but, dang, this sure was expectable to happen.

Well, okay, that's not all true, we'll try to finish the remake of DE I (perhaps we'll release what's done of episode II, too), but that's only because I hate having unfinished stuff. Don't want to waste all that footage y'know. But the main thing is, Da Europeans is not going to become a real series, as we planned.

Man, I think it's time to get used to this. Always planning big, then just losing all the motivation on the way.

Thanks to everyone who was anticipating this project, and sorry for the disappointment.

Well, the past few months have been filled with on-and-off animating periods. Shot by shot, Rolz and I are getting nearer and nearer to the end of the Da Europeans 1 remake. At this point, I'm working on one of the last shots. I estimate we only need about 3 more shots.

On another note, we found a voice actor for the main antagonist (sorry, can't give the name out yet). I personally think we couldn't have gotten a better person for the role.

Expect the Da Europeans 1 remake to be done very soon.

We've finally made some progress on the series! I've animated a lot. I have more time for brickfilming. The reason for that is kind of sad; I animated with mixed feelings. But it gets the job done. The remake of episode I is about 70% done now.

Time has passed, things have happened, but still, our biggest obstacle is motivation.

For a good while now, we couldn't get ourselves to continue working on this thing; mostly school, personal life, stuff like that was keeping us from it.

Though, yesterday, Bert showed me an old, dusty script and audio track of his forgotten project, MacBert. It managed to motivate us so much, that Bert started animating episode I again, and I started working on some editing, too. We're on track.

Whatever happens, we won't give this project up. We might slow down awfully, but we'll never, ever stop.

Actually, we probably will sometime.

And now for two other things. Bert did get a new compy, and, umm, happy new year to y'all.

Rolz - Pleasant to the ear

Well, not really.

Alrighty, so you might not know about this, but we want to make DE as ours as possible. That means music, mostly (ambient, or just simple background music, and stuff like that). Of course, when it comes to the flashback scenes with '80s song, we use copyrighted stuff, but that's about five (or so) seconds, so yeah.

Basically, all we had so far was crappy MIDI. But now, using some cool VST stuff, we can make... better music. I guess. Bert composes and I do the mixing. Or something like that. I'll post something when we get the hang of this.

Oh, and Bert's not getting a new compy. Originally, his father wanted to close the internet café he had, and he'd have given Bert one of the cool compies from there. But he (Bert's dad) changed his mind, and he's not closing the café. That doesn't mean Bert will never animate again... he's just a bit angry right now. ;)

DE IV is starting to take form. "What the hell is the point of writing DE IV when even the first episode is unfinished?", I hear you ask. Well, because it's good to have our workflow smoothed out with completed scripts.

We had no idea how to start DE IV up until now. Yesterday evening, some cool random jokes striked our minds. And once we've begun...

DE I will be completed around the beginning of next year (before you go "WTF!?", let me remind you that it's only a few weeks away), as BertL will only continue animating when he gets his new compy. That's gonna happen in about three weeks.

Keep on waiting. Dudes. And dudettes. Or whoever who even cares.

We went through the DE III script yesterday and changed a few things. I'm still not really satisfied; it feels a bit thin as it is. Oh well, it's only the lead-up to all the cool stuff that's gonna happen in the series.

Rolz - Editing the remake

Started workin' on her yesterday. It's going well so far. The beginning looks pretty cool, especially with all the cheesy sound effects. I found a cool way to do a motion blur effect, so that's solved as well. One thing we still need is some background music.

I'm afraid of one thing though. The purpose of this remake is to fix all the problems the original version had (seriously, a three hours rush-job can't do no good), and to give a better start to the whole DE series. But now that I look through the script again, it seems too... howyasay'... "unique". I and Bert are thinking in a very special way (this applies especially to our jokes); it's just too... wacky. Weird. Abstract. I foresee people going "omg, what was that about!?", or "that made no sense at all". Maybe I'm paranoid or something, but, you know, I don't want that to happen for the second time. I want DE to be an enjoyable series for all ages and audiences... and stuff.

Man, I seriously need to get some sleep.

Currently, I'm struggling with a motion-blur effect for a quick pan scene (I'm the editing / SFX guy in the crew, remember?), and I think I'm gonna find the solution soon.

Alright, we've had a little thinking about DE. We decided not to set any release dates at all, only some personal "let's get this done by this week" deadlines. We're trying to unfurl all knots, and make DE very loose, free project, that doesn't take too much from our personal lives.

If you think it's gonna be annoying to wait, or something like that, let us suggest this: forget DE. No, not that way. Just, simply don't think about it. You will be doing what you were doing anyways, and one day, it will be there, downloading to your HD, and it will seem like only a day had passed since the previous episode.

Seriously.

We're also gonna go kinda loose with the voice actors, I guess. Of course, we hope nobody will make us wait, like, four months or so, but if we don't stress ourselves with the project, why would we stress others with it?

Okay, 'scuse for the long-wided, almost-made-no-sense post, but 'tis been a weird day.

Syxe's having problems again, so don't be surprsied if the DE site won't work. We might look for a new hoster. Sometime.

Let's put that aside, and concentrate on the progress. We're currently struggling with the DE I remake. Voice work and the script are both done, so it's animation time. Bert already did a few secs yesterday evening.

We've also made a major script change to DE II. You're all gonna be surprised.

Or maybe not, but it will definitely be weird.

Well, I've returned. My break was more of a break from the forums, giving me more time to work on projects.

I've also finished the shooting of another scene; Rolz has yet to see some of the shots. Now that I have finished the scene, I can get working on the DE1 remake.

I also got a more professional lighting setup! I got three lamps now: one for the overall view, and two spotlights. Gives me much more ways to do shots and it's very handy IMHO.

Well, this definitely didn't last too long. Syxe fixed the whole hacker problem today, so our site is back up again as well.

I was able to have a short conversation on MSN with Bert today. He's going on holiday for two weeks. Which means he'll be back at, like, August 18th. So, the summer release date is totally out of calculation. Our new release date is "when it's done".

Alright, forget the DE site. Some hacker completely screwed up our hoster, syxe.com, and replaced all the index files with his crap. So, yeah, until this is sorted out, don't even bother checking our site, only this blog.

What's even worse is that I have absolutely no idea when will Bert's awayness thingy end. I hate slow progress. I hate hackers. I hate unfinished projects.

There's a lot of stuff going on in my life (I'm a busy man), and I've got some issues in my personal life. I'd like to get this all sorted out before I return to brickfilming again.

It's been more than two weeks without updates. I'm very sorry for that.

This is because, apart from Da Europeans, I'm also working on a (much bigger) project, called Adventures of Brickfilmers. It has a similar concept to that of Da Europeans (actually, I stole the DE idea from it), but it is much bigger. Da Europeans is done by me and Rolz, mainly, whereas this project envolves a dozen guys.

Enough about that, you want to know about Da Europeans.

I actually animated some stuff. In fact, I almost got another whole (though short) scene done. Don't worry, I won't be forgetting Da Europeans. Never.

That's right. The official site is up. It's not much yet, that's true, but you can still take a look around to see a shadow of what's about to come. Some stuff is not functional / appropriate yet, though. The release of DE II and the remake of DE I will fix that.

There's one thing we didn't mention yet. DE II's gonna be in widescreen! Not the real 16:9 aspect ratio, but enough to make it look cinematic (40-40 pixels cropped from the screen's top and bottom, turning 640x480 into 640x400).

Well, scrap the "taking a break" part.

The projects I'm working on either need rescripting, are too big, or (in case of a community project; yes, I'm "directing" two CPs) are near death, due to inactive script writers. Which means I'm having two "more active" projects at the moment: Da Europeans, and a short remake of a film, for a Brickfilms montage on Brickfest.

Now, because I'm only going to do the montage clip when I feel like it, I started building the next DE set. I still have to film the first twenty-to-thirty seconds, though.

I've just finished one of the two longer scenes. I will now start working on some other Brickfilming projects (sorry, Da Europeans, I'm a busy man, but you'll always be my child!), before going on. Don't worry, if I hurry up, I'll get the other stuff done in about a week or two.

So, with several short scenes, a complete introduction and a bigger scene filmed, edited and ready, I estimate we're well over 50% of making the film.

Remember a few posts back, where I talked to people from 4 in het Land, after it aired a few minutes of me talking about brickfilms?

Well, last tuesday and friday, I was in the newspaper (don't worry, practically the same article)! The same article was also posted on the internet. I'll scan it all some time soon.

Well, some other people from another TV station read the article, and called me if I wanted to do more TV stuff. Well, I said yes, and they stopped by today!

The show will be featured on RTV Noord Holland (regional TV station), on Wednesday, repeating all evening. I'll try to get a digital version online.

Okay, I made the next set. On this set, I will shoot about two minutes (yes, Rolz, even you didn't expect that one, haha!) of footage overall, which means I'm going to do 2/3 of the film. Sounds like a lot, but it's not really much. You'll see when the film is done.

Unfortunately, we're in the middle of a redecoration on the house right now, which will take about another week. Both of the computers are covered in that plastic kind of sheet stuff, for protection against paint and all. Which means I can't animate. Poor, poor me.

Fortunately, I will be able to work out the following episodes, and the overall plot. Oh, there is going to be some plot alright.

That's right kiddos, two scenes out of eight are done. Which means, I'm halfway through with half of the stuff.

If the other scenes are this length, we would have about 4 and a half minutes of filming, excluding the super duper intro and credits and stuff. So my 5 minutes expectation was just about right.

I may have said this before, but - a classmate of mine (one with a LEGO collection I'm jealous of) may be going to design some sets! Awesome, isn't?!

As some of you may know, I was given the "pleasure" of transferring files on a super-slow infrared dial-up connection. On my mom's laptop. Tee hee.

Well, we can forget about the redub. I forgot that I got rid of the raw footage of part 1 to save some space. I only have a compressed version, so we could only do it with bad picture quality. Meh.

The progress of part II is slowing down, as both me and Bert have more and more other things to do. But June is still far away, we'll probably finish it by then.

At the moment I'm posting this, I'm wrapping up the last shot of the current scene. Which means I got two scenes finished.

Hmm, over one minute of animation already? No. Way. If 2 scenes > 1 minute, then 10 scenes > 5 minutes.

However, the first three (introduction scenes) can be deleted, if Rolz and I decide to do a redub of part one. Saves about 1 an a half minute.

Well, one thing's for sure: part 2's going to be longer than anything I've done. W00t.

Keeping you updated on what's going on in here: I've been sorting out all the LEGOs I have (and that's a lot) over the weekend, and I'm still busy. It eats time.

More Da Europeans-related: I was going to shoot the first scene last Sunday (no, not the opening scene, I'm not filming in chronological order), but I ended up trying to do it on the stupid computer, which didn't work very well. I plan to really do it this evening between 6PM and 10PM (or, for the guys who know how digital times should be: 18:00 and 22:00).

Rolz - Minor stuff

Yeah, I don't want to seem like a lazy bum who never posts, so I thought I'd share a few minor things I haven't mentioned yet.

Okay, so I'm gonna do the editing of part II, which might cause some problems... no, no, it's not my editing program, nor me; it's the large piece of uncompressed video files Bert will have to send me. Transferring files, which are around 2 or 3 gigabytes ain't a nice business. It requires utmost patience, and heaps of time. But we have to do this, because my editing program is a lot better than Bert's.

We also "argued" a bit about who will do the audio editing. Well, uh, Bert really wanted to do it, but I'm afraid he'll have to pass this one, since I can't work well with footage that already has audio attached to it. It would just cause even more problems.

Sorry, Bert. Maybe next time.

For now, let's just say things are coming along well.

BertL - Small problems?

Well, I've done the first animation test of the shot I posted earlier, and it came out very promising.

For consistency stuff, Rolz wants me to shoot it all at 15FPS. However, those who know me also know that I have been working a lot on shooting smoothly at 24FPS. Perhaps, I can shoot nice stuff at both framerates now, I don't know. I do know it'll be very new to me to go back to 15FPS.

Also, here's another small problem. MonkeyJam doesn't work! For picture quality, Rolz wants me to shoot with MonkeyJam. Now, on the old computer this wasn't a big problem (except for crashes), but the new XP won't let MonkeyJam interact with the webcam very well. You see, when I start capturing, the image capturing screen keeps crashing on me.

BertL - Update!

Yay, small update. Here's the first 'exclusive' Da Europeans 2 test shot! (Haha, not even Rolz knew this would be in the film.)

I've sent out the lines to everybody envolved, and am currently recording my lines. I'm planning to animate the stuff that envolves only me and Rolz first. Oh, if there's anybody who can send me a desk lamp, please do. I need some extra lighting.

So, yeah, script finished, currently busy with audio/animation.

Rolz - Re-dub of part I

Since we've been constantly recieving comments on how bad the audio work of part I was, we decided to re-dub it. Sometime. We'll re-record all the unaudible lines, and all that stuff.

The completed script of part II is really cool in my opinion (you can't really go wrong with Bertyboy), but I highly doubt Bert will be able to keep the film in his "five minutes length-limit".

We'll keep all o' you informed.

Some hard working and no MSN Messenger destraction really does work out. I have fully completed the script. Now, the only thing I need to do is to get the script out to the voice actors.

We also need to find a new "big old guy" (that's, the name replacement for "God", I found "God" being a bit too insultive); however, I think I found the right person. I still need to ask him though.

Well, that's about all the news I got. Onto contacting the voice actors.

BertL - Script progress

Okay, Rolz and I got our storyline, and I am halfway through with the script, and I must admit... it is a lot harder than I would have thought.

Part II is going to contain a lot of stuff: a prologue setting things straight, an introduction making everything of part 1 clear, us fleeing, meeting of some new people, cool jokes... it's a lot of stuff to script, and it's hard to fit it all in the length the film will be (I promised myself a maximum of five minutes should be for the film).

However, up until now it's going fairly well (except for some drastic script changes Rolz knows nothing about), and I'm glad it is.

Also: I found a very cool song that fits the film well! It'll be played in the credits, yay!

Rolz - First post

Wo-ho-ho, it's me.

Well, what Bert said pretty much covers all the stuff. We're both weird and kind of funny. And Europeans, of course. Bert's habitat is the Netherlands, and mesa lives in Hungary.

Okay, if you haven't seen the first episode of Da Europeans, go ahead and do it now. Yes, we're already done with the first part of this mess. W00t.

As for part II: we're currently in the scripting pages, and, well, uh, it's coming along.

Well, the beginning is hardest, as some people say. This is the first post. Nothing more to say, except that I would have preferred to fool around with the settings when I am typing this. Oh well.

Let me start out by telling a bit about myself. The two of us (that is: me and Rolz) started doing a Brickfilming project that wouldn't only envolve us, but many other brickfilmers from all over Europe.

As both me and Rolz are, well, weird in a funny way, this is going to absolutely rock.
